I suspect it’s more common than perhaps most people might like to let on, I know I have done it in the past (sorry Mum!) and frankly there is a time and place for it.   Bear with me, think about a time when you may have received something you didn’t necessarily want or need but think that perhaps someone else might like it? Just saying. It’s not wrong, it’s environmentally friendly!
